Since 1997 Head of "Regional Center for Microcythemia and Congenital Anemia and Iron Dysmetabolism",center recognized as a reference by the European Reference Network (ERN) EuroBloodNet.

Hematology mainly addressed to congenital and acquired anemias, to congenital and acquired alterations of iron metabolism. Experience in the experimentation of innovative therapies, in this capacity he was and is a "Principal Investigator" in international multicentre Phase I-II clinical trials. Experience in designing non-profit studies and the use of "Orphan Drugs". Experience in the development of non-invasive diagnostic methods of iron overload. He is part of the Board of the "Webthal" project. Visiting Professor at the School Hematology and that of Pharmacology of the Genoa University.

Member of the Training Affairs Commission (CAF) of the Italian Society of Hematology. He is reviewer for numerous scientific journals. In October 2014 he was elected, for a four-year term, President of the "Italian Society of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies" (SITE) renewed for three years in 2018. He is President of the "Foundation for Research on Anemia and Hemoglobinopathies in Italy" (FOR ANEMIA).
