Prof. Dr. Patricia Aguilar Martinez graduated in medicine from Montpellier Medical School (France) and went on to specialize in Biology and Genetics at different French Universities, Her PhD thesis was on the "molecular biology of haemophilia and hemoglobinopathy". Since 1989, she has been a consultant in genetic counselling for hereditary haematological disorders, particularly haemophilia, hemoglobinopathies and inherited iron disorders.

She is currently a Professor of haematology at the faculty of medicine of Montpellier and Head of the department of Hematological Biology at Montpellier University hospital. She is the coordinator of the Reference Centre on rare red cell and iron disorders at Montpellier teaching hospital. This department is also a centre of expertise on rare coagulation disorders, under the responsibility of her colleague, Dr Biron Andreani.

She has participated as a workpackage leader on "education and training" in several European networks projects (ENERCA), and she is currently a member of the European Rare disease Network in Hematology, Eurobloodnet, and one of the coordinators of the transversal field of action on Education and Training.

Her department was designated WHO Collaborating Centre for the global prevention and management of genetic disorders in Hematology, in May 2020.
