Dr. Franz Schaefer, Chair of the Coordinators of the 24 ERNs, has answered key questions on present and future of ERNs

One of the biggest challenges, says Schaefer, is getting local, regional and national healthcare providers to make ample use of this unique resource.

European Reference Networks (ERNs) are currently at the second year of implementation. While the biggest success stories accomplished so far by the networks implementation will be presented at the upcoming 4th Conference on European Reference Networks, "ERNs in action" (21&22 November 2018, Brussels), it is also time to make ERNs more accessible to patients and health professionals.

Dr Franz Schaefer, from Heidelberg University, current Chair of the Coordinators of the 24 ERNs, has answered some key questions on the objectives, achievements and future of the networks. One of the biggest challenges, says Schaefer, is getting local, regional and national healthcare providers to make ample use of this unique resource.
